“Officers entered and found the complainant deceased.” A cause of death has not been released, and the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s office had yet to complete the autopsy as of Sunday morning, but police say she was murdered. Her next of kin has been notified.

Stokes says in a release sent to media and posted to Facebook Sunday that “there were signs that a person or persons had entered the house to possibly commit a burglary.” But police are not yet sure what, if anything, was taken.

“As of right now, investigators have no witnesses,” Stokes says this morning, which is why the department is now seeking the public’s assistance. “If anyone has seen any suspicious activity in recent days in or near the 11300 block of Earlywood Drive,” says the department’s release, “they are asked to contact Detective Scott Sayers at 214-671-3647.”

Avanell Cowgill’s husband James, a longtime city of Dallas employee and Navy veteran, died in January 2009.
